Vaazhaippo vadai or the banana blossom fritters is a tasty snack with a little twist with goodness of banana blossoms. Generally masala vadai is a simple deep fried snack. Just adding vaazhaippo to this vadai makes it special. 
Since the banana blosom doesn't have any major flavour, the children too could not find out that the blossoms have been added to the vadais.

Ingredients:

  • Kadalai paruppu / Gram dhal - 1 cup
  • Vaazhai poo/Banana blossoms - 1 cup (finely chopped)
  • Onion - 1 medium
  • Green chillies - 3 nos
  • Ginger-garlic (crushed) - 2 teaspoon
  • Sombu (saunf or fennel seeds) - 1 teaspoon
  • Salt - as required

Procedure:

  • Wash and soak the kadalai paruppu for atleast 2 hours.
  • Clean the vaazhaippo. Remove the two parts (the transparent scale and the style) from the florets as shown in the below picture. Chop it finely and keep it ready.
  • When the dhal is soaked, take one fist full of dhall and keep aside. Transfer rest of the dhal to the mixer jar along with sombu (saunf/fennel seeds) and green chillies. 
  • Grind it into coarse consistency. (Like the dhals have been very very finely chopped in knife). You can also use the food processor to grind this.
  • Transfer this to a mixing bowl. 
  • Now take the chopped banana blossoms into the mixer jar and run the mixer. Grind it coarse.
  • Transfer this to the ground dhal. 
  • Add salt, crushed ginger-garlic, chopped onion and the (fist full) whole dhals which was soaked and kept aside. Mix well.
  • Heat oil enough for deep frying.
  • When the oil is hot, take little dhal-blossom mixture, make balls and flatten it to bring it to the shape of vadai and drop it gently in hot oil.
  • Let it fry both the sides. Remove it when it turns beautiful golden brown colour.

Yumm !! Crispy.. Crunchy.. Vaazhaippo vadais are ready to be gobbled.
